What is DX Portable?

DX Portable is the offline version of the DX Reader. This cross platform reader enables users to download fully encrypted DX Reader eBooks either on a purchase or subscription basis. You can read all your purchased DX Reader eBooks offline in the DX Portable reader. For subscribed eBooks, you will have to connect to the Internet to authenticate your subscription details. Once authenticated you can disconnect and continue reading your subscription eBooks offline.

What are the advantages of DX Portable?

The DX Portable reader enables users to download encrypted content for offline reading.

  • Cross platform compatibility: – DX Portable is compatible with PC/Windows and Linux/Unix operating systems.
  • Offline DX Reader: - The offline DX Reader software is a free downloadable.
  • Offline access: - You can read all your purchased eBooks offline in the DX Portable reader. For subscription books, you do require to be connected to the Internet to authenticate your subscription details. Once authenticated you can disconnect from the Internet and continue reading your subscribed eBooks offline.
  • Digital reading features: - The DX Portable includes various features like multiple ways of page navigation (such as page, section, go to page, next/previous page), whole book search, bookmarking, multicolored highlighting, font sizing and personal annotations.
  • Research Book: - One of the special features of DX Portable is the unique Research Book, which allows you to add pages/chapter from your subscribed/purchased eBooks to create a self-compiled resource of research content.

What are the system requirements for reading my eBook on the DX Portable?

The system specifications for the DX Portable are:

  1. Machine configuration:
      • Minimum: PII 300 MHz, 64 MB RAM, 15 MB Free Disk Space
      • Recommended: PII 700 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 15 MB Free Disk Space
  2. Minimum system requirements for Windows platform:
      • Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP
  3. Minimum system requirements for Linux platform:
      • Red Hat Linux 7.1 and above,
  4. Dial-Up Configuration:
      • Minimum dial-up: 26kbps

How can I download the DX Portable?

You can download the Reader from the eBook Readers page or the Download Centre.

To download the Reader from the eBook Readers page:

  • Click on the eBook Formats button on the left panel.
  • In the eBook Formats page, click on the eBook Readers button (top right corner).
  • Now click on the DX Portable logo.
  • Select the platform on which you want to download the reader and click on the Download Reader button.
    A pop-up window will prompt you to either open or save the file.
  • Click on the ‘Save this file to disk’ option to download the exe file on your machine.
  • After the download is complete, locate the install.exe file and double click to start installation.
  • Follow the on screen instructions to complete the installation.

To download the DX Portable from the Download Centre:

  • Go to the DX Portable bookshelf in the Download Centre.
  • Click on the ‘download’ link. A pop-up window will prompt you to either open or save the file.
  • Click on the ‘Save this file to disk’ option to download the exe file on your machine.
  • After the download is complete, locate the install.exe file and double click to start installation.
  • Follow the on screen instructions to complete the installation.

What is reader activation? Why must I activate my reader?

All DX Portable eBooks are encrypted and can be read only on activated copies of the DX Reader. Activation assigns a unique reader id to the downloaded reader. Activation is necessary to download and read premium eBook titles that have been secured for distribution.

How do I activate my reader?

Activation is a one-time process and you will be prompted to activate the reader only when you open the reader for the first time after installation.

Activating your copy of the offline DX Reader is a simple process.

  • Open the newly installed DX Reader. You will be prompted to activate the reader.
    Note: If you are behind a proxy firewall, then the reader will first prompt you to configure the proxy settings. Enter the relevant details to proceed to reader activation.
  • Click on the Activate button to activate the reader. Successful activation will take you to the Reader Library.

I want to purchase a book? How can I find the required title?

DX Portable books are directly accessible using any of the following access modes:
a) DX Search the Catalogue
b) Browse with eSubscribe

a) DX Search the Catalogue

DX Search is a sophisticated search engine that translates your eBook search query into a comprehensive and incisive ‘contextual’ representation of the requested information.

To DX Search, key in your search query and, if required, fine-tune the search by choosing the appropriate search options. A comprehensive result-set with connecting links ensures immediate access not only to the book but also to its content.

b) Browse with eSubscribe

‘Browse with eSubscribe’ allows you to browse through a select category or scan the entire catalogue.

To browse through the titles available under a particular category, just click on the requisite category link. Alternatively, you may fine-tune your search by clicking on a subcategory link.

How do I download my eBook on the DX Portable?

All your purchased/subscribed DX Portable eBooks will be available in the Download Centre under the DX Portable Bookshelf. All the books will be listed along with their respective transaction ids. To download eBooks on the DX Portable,

  1. Open the DX Portable library.
  2. Click on the ‘Download Book List’ link.
    You will be prompted to enter the Transaction Id of the book/s you want to download.
  3. Copy the relevant transaction id from the ‘DX Portable’ bookshelf of the Download Centre and paste the same in the space provided.
  4. Click OK.
    All the books belonging to the transaction id will be displayed on the library interface alongwith a download icon next to each book.
  5. Click on the relevant download icon to download the book to the Library.
    The book/s will be archived in the appropriate bookshelf.

What is a transaction id?

The transaction id is an eBook order-identifier that is auto-generated every time you make a purchase for the DX Portable. All books belonging to a particular order will have the same transaction id.

All your purchases will be listed in the Download Centre under the DX Portable Bookshelf along with the respective transaction id. You will require the transaction id to download your DX Portable books.

When I try to access my Subscription bookshelf, the reader gives me a ‘server not accessible’ message. Why?

For subscription books, the DX Portable reader connects to the DX Portable server to authenticate your subscription details. You will get the 'server not accessible' message if you are not connected to the Internet or if you are working behind a proxy firewall. On successful authentication, all your subscribed eBooks will be listed in the Subscription bookshelf. Once the eBook opens in the DX Reader, you may disconnect and read the book.

Please be advised that the subscription book list will be available offline till you shift to Purchase Bookshelf, Download Book List page or close the DX Reader Library. To re-access your subscription bookshelf you will need to connect to the Internet.

How many times can I download my eBook?

All DX Portable eBooks have been encrypted for secure distribution and hence can be downloaded only once. This is a security measure to prevent unauthorized access to copyrighted content.

Can I download my purchased DX Portable eBook on my PDA?

No. The DX Portable is currently not compatible with PDAs and hence DX Portable eBooks can be read only on PCs wherein the offline Reader is installed and activated.

Can I copy or lend my purchased or subscribed DX Portable eBook?

No. Copying and/or lending of books is not permitted to prevent illegal distribution of content.

What happens in the event of a system crash?

In the event of a system crash, kindly contact the Help Desk with adequate details.

Can I make my own notes from my purchased or subscribed eBook? If yes, how?

Yes. The DX Portable includes all the regular features of the online DX Reader like text highlighting, page bookmarking and paragraph annotations. The DX Reader Research Book is a powerful research tool that allows you to collect content of reference from your subscribed books.

Please be advised that your Research Book content may not be copied, used or distributed in violation of copyright rules or stipulated terms and conditions. Also note that pages/chapters added to the Research Book from subscribed eBook/s will be available only till the subscription period is in effect. Once the subscription time expires, the pages/chapters will disappear from the Research Book.

Can I print or copy chapters, sections or pages I want to use for my research?

No. The current version of the DX Portable does not support the print and copy facility. If your immediate needs necessitate printing or copying of content, please use our ePrint/eCopy service.

What are my payment options?

You have the option of paying for your purchases through conventional credit card payment or using your Wallet to service your purchases.

The credit cards accepted by our eBookstore are Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Eurocard, Visa Debit, Switch, Solo, Delta and JCB.

Can I request a refund or cancel my purchase at any time?

No. All DX Portable eBooks are sold on a firm sale basis. Requests for change of the subscribed title or the subscribed timescale are not considered for security reasons.

Can I extend my subscription time period through the DX Portable?

No. This feature is not available in the current version of the Reader. You will have to re-subscribe to the book conventionally i.e. through the eBookstore.

What is unlimited access?

Unlimited access is one of the subscription models of offline subscription (DX Portable). Unlimited access is synonymous to buying the eBook. The advantage of buying books for unlimited access is that you can read your eBooks offline without being connected to the Internet.
